10 Siècles avant l'ère chrétienne, les Israélites la cultivaient déjà. Il y a 28 siècles, les grecs la consommaient et les Romains, 178 ans avant JC avaient répertorié officiellement 26 variétés.
Du moyen âge jusqu'à 1850, l'évolution de la culture de la pomme fut modérée, car on lui préfèrait la poire (surtout en France et en Belgique).
A la fin du 19è siècle, en France, plus de 500 variétés étaient officialisées et aujourd'hui il existe plus de 11000 variétés à travers le monde.
